Feral Is Kinky

UK ragga legend Feral aka MC Kinky brightens up the lazer basement tomorrow night with her unique stylings and moombahton sounds alongside the gorgeous DJ and stylist Nova Dando at Liz Bisoux's night Blonde. With upstairs promising Hitchcock-themed tranny bar-top cabaret courtesy of Grizzle it's sure to be a full-on crazy evening.

Feral, as MC Kinky, lead the E-Zee Possee who were responsible for '90s rave anthem 'Everything Starts With An E'which was subsequently banned by the BBC for its controversial lyrics. Since then, she has appeared on numerous TV shows, performed at many festivals and, most importantly, graced our fair doors.

She laid down this hot mix recently and was kind enough to share it with us and chat festivals, '90s TV show appearances and exciting international projects...

Hi Feral. Please tell us a bit about the moombaton scene here in east London and how you're involved in it!

I’ve been into moombahton since summer 2010. I really liked a remix by Munchi from Rotterdam and he liked my vocals so he sent me a demo to collaborate on that eventually became my 1st solo moombahton track "#Tweet" and is getting a  proper release early this summer. He got really ill, so the original project didn't quite happen, but since then I've MC'd over his set at Valtifest and he's sending me a new banger to collaborate on after we both get back from Miami. I'll be playing at his release party on the 20th April at Hidden in Vauxhall; its a good line up, so if people want to hear that and other global bass sounds that night will be a good one to go to.

I live in Kilburn, so North Weezey's my area; the East connection has come via Liz Bisoux who plays that genre amongst others. She's the resident at Blonde and is always well ahead of the game. She was the first one to put on a moombahton night at Dalston Superstore and books me to play moombahton and global bass sets and to MC in the dutty basement.

Club Popozuda, run by Sean Casey (The Bumps) and James Hurrell, has moved to Floripa, near Old Street and I just  DJ'd a moombahton set for their benefit last week to raise money for the indigenous tribes of Brazil. Ms Bisoux is getting Bumps down to Blonde quite soon, he mashes it up nicely.

You played at Lovebox last year... do you have any summer festival plans this year?

I was really lucky to play the main stage last year and the year before at Lovebox thanks to James Bailey and also Glastonbury for the fabulous NYC Downlow. This year I'm playing at the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Festival in Miami with a few of the stateside boys and then Luna Lupa festival again in Brazil, and also the Netherlands. On May 12th I'm playing with Punx Sound Check at The Playground event With A-Trak, Dillon Francis and Porter Robinson at the Coronet. It’s gonna be a really good one.

There's a great video of you performing on cult TV show The Word. You look fit. How did that come about and what was it like to do?

HAHAHA! (laughs then blushes) Thank you, (laughs some more) HAHAHA! I had a few club and chart hits back then, so they asked me to  perform on the show. Whitney Houston was there that day too. It was live, so a bit stressy. I played with the band and dancers, but it’s always really good fun too. Terry Christian told me after he knew not to say anything shady about me, like he usually did about guests before they went on! Too right! A live mic is a very powerful and deadly weapon in the right hands!

MC Kinky - Get Over It (Live on The Word on Channel Four)

You're playing at Blonde this Friday! Have you got anything exciting planned for your set or any special surprises for the lazer basement?

Yes I have, Nova Dando and I are gonna rock the arse out of the basement. Liz and I rocked it last time, and the crowd were really into the music we dropped. I'm looking forward to playing with Nova and getting on the mic.

We hear on the grapevine you've got lots of exciting (maybe international?) new projects happening at the moment. Can you tell us all about them please?

That tall, entangled vine! The list seems to be growing. I'm working with quite a few different people outside of my solo projects at the moment. I've got a really good engineer who I like working with at Saint Reatham Studios in South London, called James Hurr. Were starting a new side project together, then there’s Bumps, Geek Boy & Rebel Sonix, Punx Sound Check, Jake Twell & Jam Rock in the UK. There’s several European, Stateside and Canadian guys I'm working with, but I've just finished tracks for ETC!ETC! (LA) Sazon Booya (NYC) and Pickster & Melo (AZ). The other tracks are getting finished when I get back from a break I'm taking after Miami, then it's studio, video and rehearsal time!

FERAL is KINKY plays the basement with Nova Dando for Blonde as Grizzle takes over the upstairs bar with Hitchcock-themed cabaret this Friday 2nd March from 9pm - 3am.
