RELEASE: Harm Reduction Fundraiser

  • Loren Dell'Arco

Release is the national centre of expertise on drugs and drugs law providing free and confidential specialist advice to the public and professionals. Release also campaigns for changes to UK drug policy to bring about a fairer and more compassionate legal framework to manage drug use in our society.

The UK is currently one of the deadliest countries in Europe for people who use drugs. This situation is only set to get worse: the spread of synthetic opioids and the contamination of multiple drug supplies is a serious concern. Given government inaction, we need to fight against the forces preventing change around us to truly bring change.

We need spaces to keep people safe, alive, and informed. Release opened the Harm Reduction Hub in East London last year: it is a community drop-in centre which provides low threshold harm reduction advice and signposting for any visitor, with the goal of benefitting people who are traditionally underserved due to stigma – such as people who rough sleep, use drugs, or sell sex. Through the Hub, anyone is able to get drug test strips, drug testing kits, legal advice (similar to a helpline), signposted to relevant services, as well as a warm drink and a friendly face.

Come party with the party-professionals, the salacious solicitors, and your local neighbourhood harm reduction heroes. We are fundraising for the Harm Reduction Hub – the antidote to an increasingly punitive environment, which sees  more and more of us experience criminalisation for simply existing. We are raising money for Hub 2.0 so that more of East London can get real harm reduction support, grounded in radical empathy and fighting for a world we don’t only get to survive but thrive.
