Joining us at the debut of brand new cosmic happening Block Out the Sun is enigmatic DJ, producer and champion of the analogue Stupid Human! The Oslo-based record collector and label boss is responsible for a vast discography of deep, chuggy funk and disco edits, and if his eclectic collection of releases is anything to go by, we are in for a real treat on Saturday. We caught up with him to chat crate-digging, Amalfi nightclub mysteries (really!) and plans for Block Out the Sun.
Hi Stupid Human! We can’t wait to have you join us for Block Out The Sun! How has your 2017 been so far?
So far so good, we had a pretty rubbish winter in Oslo though, not enough snow to make it out to the ski slopes or take the kids sledging but this meant more time in the studio, so no bad thing!
What is your favourite release of 2017 so far?
Whaat? Can't give them goodies away! There’s so much music out there I think its hard to say my favourite, but if I had to choose one it would be Tenderlonius - Song for my Father for the accomplishment and musicianship. I’m a big fan of pushing stuff that’s got great musicianship that makes you want to let go. I also like the dumb shit too where is just a drum machine and a bassline.
What are some of your favourite crate-digging spots in London?
The best places are garage sales and flea markets but that’s not limited to London, that’s a world wide thing.
What is the weirdest/best place you have ever played?
A long time ago I played in a house being renovated out in Surrey somewhere - proper sketchy vibes, I overindulged and apparently the faces I made whilst trying to play records are legendary!
What is the most prized record in your collection?

How has your home, Oslo, influenced your sound as an artist?
I think it might take a little longer to effect me that way - it's just under two years that Iv’e been here. However, productivity has risen (less distractions, long winter). I made an album recently and one track in particular has direct fjord-like influences appropriately named Dark Water. I was running a warbling arpeggio when I knocked the keyboard and got this awesome ethereal from-another-world sea creature sound. It took about 40 minutes to make and I sat back and went now what? For once I took stock and realised that it was DONE and that it didn’t matter that it only took 40 mins to make.
If you had to trace your music career back to one track that started it all, what would it be and why?
The first record I ever bought was Napoleon X1V – They're coming to take me away on seven inch. I think that says it all really!
If you had a Time Machine and could go dancing anywhere/when, where would you go?
You know what, it would be easy to be clichéd here but I've got a great story. A mate of mine who I lived with some years ago is from the Amalfi Coast in Italy. We went to see his dad for a couple of weeks and they took us all to his uncle's nightclub which was built out of a cave system about 30 meters above sea level. Time had passed in the nineties when we visited, but you could just tell those walls had some unbelievable stories to tell. I think it was called Africana and I’ve had dreams of playing there since. A couple of years ago, said uncle was found hanging from the lighting rig and I’ve heard it wasn’t suicide.. it is Italy after all...
