JAGUAR: Utopia At The Mothership!

Nightlife queen & BBC Radio 1 host JAGUAR is every bit as memorable as her name. Hailing from Alderney in the Channel Islands & based in East London, the broadcaster, DJ & Journalist is among the new guard of multi-hyphenate talents steering UK dance music towards brighter waters. This Friday, we welcome her back to The Mothership for her UK Cunty Club: UTOPIA. We caught up with her to discuss small-cap clubbing & all things grassroots.
We’re so excited to have you back at Dalston Superstore this July! How and why was Utopia created?
Superstore is my spiritual home. One of my first ever gigs in London was in the basement in 2017. UTOPIA is my baby, my platform, my vision. It’s where I try to incorporate everything I love about club culture: exciting curation, community, a place to meet new friends and discover unreal music, freedom and JOY. I started the parties in 2020 and the label began in 2023. Utopes is my proudest achievement to date.

You’ve been vocal online about the importance of supporting grassroots, smaller venues. As a DJ and Promoter, how does the experience contrast with larger clubs?
Small clubs are where the underground breathes and where scenes thrive.
I have so many incredible memories of partying and playing in small clubs from Pikes Ibiza, to Venue MOT in LDN, to Bret in Amsterdam. With the commercialisation of dance music, I often crave the intimacy and transience of a small cap club. It’s where the best crowds are, the one’s who really love the music. There’s nothing better.

In your opinion, what’s important to preserve in DJ/club culture? Contrastingly, what would you leave at the door?
We must protect the sense of freedom that people can feel on the dance floor. We must nurture small communities and prioritise their needs and safety. And, of course, music must always be the focal point.
Let’s leave behind: dance music tourists, people who love their phones more than the DJ, and music that doesn’t push boundaries.

It’s important to us that there’s more ways to connect with our audience than Instagram. Thanks for chatting with us outside of the Metasphere. As a radio presenter and general nightlife diva, what’s your fave way to connect with your audience?
I love using my voice on the radio, I’ll always have a special connection with my listeners and the artists that I champion on BBC Introducing Dance on Radio 1. Social media and AI, will never be able to compete with real human connection.
I’ve also enjoyed connecting with my audience in a new way as an artist who releases music. I’m loving this new direction that I’m going down, and excited to see where it takes me 🙂
3 songs that encapsulate Utopia’s energy?
Kevin Aviance – Cunty
Orchid x Crybaby – heaven/jealous (Crybaby’s Angel Edit)
Jaguar – Club Feelz

What can we expect for Utopia on 31st July?! What are you most keen for?
You can expect mind-blowing music from the likes of myself, Wolf Cutt, Sooyeon and more, live performances, a VERY special guest and ofc, plenty of UK Cunty (UKC)!

Grab your tickets to UTOPIA while you still can! See you this Friday darlings xxx
