"We are not hung up on genres, because we think that the magic lies in the diversity and surprise of sounds and influences from the whole sphere of dance music. It’s just gotta have soul and give c*nt."
After two years (and twenty-one functions) of deep xxxstacy, GAUCHE are gearing up to present their massive SECOND BIRTHDAY celebration on Friday 1st December – with a gag-worthy lineup that pulls in the very hottest underground queer wave-makers from New York, Paris and London.
S’aint Panic, Sylvio B, Goh Well and resident J. Aria will ignite the basement in kaleidoscopic turns of ballroom, acid and electronic fierceness – whilst local icons Jane Norman and Dorothy Perkins display the most vital in cross-dressing anthems in the bar.
Ahead of this monumental occasion, we sat down with them to discuss favourite moments, iconic tracks, legendary posters and all-star performers!
It’s hard to believe that you’re already two years old! How would you describe the flavour, and sounds and vision of Gauche to those who don’t know?
If you come to Gauche you’re going to ki-ki. So we really put all of our hearts into inviting the finest musical voices from across the world to truly serve in the basement. We are not hung up on genres, because we think that the magic lies in the diversity and surprise of sounds and influences from the whole sphere of dance music. It’s just gotta have soul and give c*nt.
Gauche has welcomed performers from across the world. Who would you say stands out as a memorable guest, and do you have any stand-out moments from the two years that you feel exemplify the magic of Gauche?
We have been so lucky in the scope of talent that our selectors have brought to Gauche. Our resident hosts truly put in the WORK to deliver the energy and stunts that a party needs, and they are the backbone of the thing. It would be impossible to select a favourite performer, as every guest has elevated the function in their own invaluable ways. But a few that come to mind are Luscious’ headline set, Evin and Ferrari Rot’s show-stopping b2b, Goh Well’s stunning basement warm-up set and Honey B bringing that New York heat at our last event in October.
Your artwork is super unique and distinctive. Who designs these, and what sort of ideas influenced the imagery and aesthetic of Gauche’s visuals?
Our designer is driskl and we think they are one of the most talented creatives working in London right now. Their aesthetic is so distinctive and singular, and it brings in all of these old 90s/00s club graphic influences into this weird and exciting new sphere. We adore them and their artworks are so integral to Gauche’s identity.
Where do you see the next two years taking Gauche, and what could the future look like for other queer underground parties in London?
Our only real focus is to continue in providing a distinctive space for the dolls and queers to kiki to fierce and vital new club voices from around the world. We don’t have any grandiose plans for domination, and we’re not so sure we ever could anyway. We are committed to the underground, and to our dancers, residents and hosts. We just want to serve!
If you had to choose one track that best captures the energy of the Gauche dancefloor, what would it be?
‘Burnin’ Up’ by DJ Haus. That acidic, sexxx, you-better-work sound!
